Disha is an opportunity for children from disadvantaged background to believe in their strengths and rise beyond all odds to become grounded, educated and sensitive individuals of the society.
Disha is not just about education for children. It involves holistic development of a child, allowing him or her to discover their hidden talents, encouraging them to believe in themselves and never let go of their dreams.
Disha Scholarships are provided to children who are good in academics and aim to pursue a career. Over 2000 children receive Disha scholarships annually.
For those kids who choose sports to studies, Disha encourages them in their pursuit. Disha Champions Programme is a sport programme, which aims to coach, train and develop children from disadvantaged communities into champions.
Disha Gems focuses on academically weak children helping them with necessary study tools and exposing them to additional coaching classes at special supplementary centers.
Activities & Programs
Career Guidance Programmes are conducted by Disha that help scholars in making the right career decisions. Students are exposed to various career opportunities available for them and are encouraged to pursue new courses. Children are also given opportunities to pursue their interests. Theatre Arts, Oratory and Arts and Crafts are some of the programs that the children are taken through during their vacations.
Mentorship programs are organized periodically to mentor students in Class XI and XII. Each scholar is assigned a mentor who helps him in making the right career choices, helps him prepare for the exams and gradually becomes his friend, philosopher and guide
Disha Leadership Club for scholars encourages children to take interest and initiative in the growth of other Disha children. Some of the activities of the Disha Club include sports, library, arts and volunteering for various causes.
Disha Awards are given away to young achievers and top scorers. The Awards are meant to motivate children to fight against all odds and live their dreams. Some of the long time recipients of the scholarship, today work in reputed organizations.
Sornammal Matriculation School
Sornammal Matriculation School was adopted in 2001, has grown into a recognized well-run educational institution in Chennai providing education to over six hundred underprivileged children in the slums of Ayanavaram. It is the most affordable matriculation school in the area.
One-third of the students are exempted from paying monthly fees.
